The three primary sterilization methods are: Ethylene Oxide (EO), Radiation, and Heat Sterilization.

1. Ethylene Oxide (EO)

EO is the most widely used sterilization method, known for its effectiveness in killing microorganisms. It has been utilized for decades and is compatible with various materials, including PETG, APET, PS, and PP, commonly used in medical blister trays.

2. Radiation Sterilization

Radiation sterilization includes gamma, electron beam, and X-ray methods, with gamma being the most common. However, radiation can cause some packaging materials to become brittle and discolored, potentially affecting performance. It is crucial to use medical-grade materials like PETG and ensure they have validated sterilization reports to maintain the safety and efficacy of the medical devices.

3. Heat Sterilization

Heat sterilization includes moist heat (steam) and dry heat methods. These methods have limitations for sterile barrier systems, as high temperatures can affect seal integrity or cause issues like delamination. Moist heat sterilization, often used in hospitals for reusable devices, requires blister trays made from high-temperature-resistant materials.
